What is Coal Tar 4% + Ketoconazole 2% Lotion Protar-K®?

Protar-K® Solution is designed to treat and prevent dandruff as well as dry or greasy scaling of the scalp, known as seborrheic dermatitis, which is a more severe form of dandruff. This medication targets scaly and itchy skin conditions like psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis, helping to alleviate symptoms. Coal tar, a key ingredient, is classified as a keratolytic agent. It works by promoting the shedding of dead skin cells from the surface layer and slowing the growth of new skin cells, effectively reducing scaling and dryness. Additionally, coal tar can relieve itchiness associated with these skin conditions.

Protar-K® Solution acts as an antifungal lotion, targeting the fungi responsible for dandruff. Ketoconazole, another active ingredient, inhibits the growth of these fungi by preventing them from forming protective cell walls. The combination of coal tar and ketoconazole not only addresses dandruff but also helps break down skin clumps on the scalp, alleviating itching and flaking.

For optimal results, apply a thin layer of Protar-K® Solution to the affected areas using clean, dry hands. Remember to wash your hands before and after application. If the solution comes into contact with your eyes, nose, or mouth, rinse thoroughly with water. While it may take several days to weeks to notice improvement, consistent use is essential to achieve the best outcomes.

This medication is generally safe but may cause mild side effects such as burning, irritation, itching, and redness at the application site. Serious side effects are rare. Although interactions with other medications taken orally or by injection are unlikely, it’s advisable to consult your doctor if you have recently used other dandruff treatments.
